During the Covid19 pandemic, the UK Government saw a need to procure additional testing and research facilities for this pandemic and any future events.
Balfour Beatty, the main contractor, approached Fleming Timber Structures to see if we could produce a canopy and external welfare facilities that looked good, could be procured quickly and could be dismantled and reassembled in the future should the facility need to move.
In conjunction with the main contractor, architect and client, Fleming created a glulam design that ticked all the boxes. A combination of glulam Moment Frames and I joist cassette units were proposed and designed- these were very large with clear spans of over 20m.
Working with our partners at Sodra UK, we manufactured the structure between the Mill in Germany and our factory in Lenzie. Due to the size, these required special transport in bespoke Trombone trailers. The structure including all of the soffits, circular roof lights, bespoke eaves and single ply roofing were all undertaken by the Fleming team and were erected in a very tight timescale to meet the urgent needs of this special project.
